No we’re not talking about something naughty… We’re talking about brushing your teeth!
According to recent research this process, which we all learned as little scallywags running around eating sweets and chocolate, is as important as always but is being neglected by thousands all over Ireland.
We know we’re guilty at Her.ie of not doing everything we should when it comes to our teeth all of the time. So we thought it might be useful to bring you some tips on looking after your dental health while we’re doing our own research. Two birds, one stone, we love it!
1. Brush Up
You have hundreds upon hundreds of different species of bacteria in your mouth. We know, gross! If bacteria are allowed to fester on your teeth you can end up with all sorts of problems including tooth decay. That is why you should brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day, once in the morning and once before you go to bed. It sounds a little crazy but time it for the first week or so, just to make sure you’re doing it for the full two minutes. Also while you’re at it, give your tongue a quick brush to prevent bad breath. Let’s face it that’s the last thing you want when you’re leaning in for a kiss with your fella!
2. Timing is Everything
Contrary to popular belief you shouldn’t brush your teeth or eat gum immediately after eating or drinking. Instead you should wait an hour and then do it. This is in case you have consumed anything that is acidic, including fruit and juices, which could seriously damage your teeth if brushed in.
3. Floss!
Flossing is something that a lot of people don’t do. According to research in the US and elsewhere, not flossing can allow dangerous bacteria and plaque to grow. If such bacteria are left, it can lead to one of two types of gum disease which has the potential to make those nightmares you have about your teeth falling out come true. Have you seen Mrs Doubtfire? Do you want to have your dentures fall into your wine glass? We didn’t think so. Worse still if bacteria enters your bloodstream, which is more likely if you have gum disease, it can cause arteries to clog and can even lead to heart disease. To help to prevent this you should floss at least once a day. The thought of it freaks us out too but one minute flossing is much better than a lifetime of heart disease.
4. Rinse Away
If you want you can also introduce mouthwash into your dental care routine. It too helps to tackle the bacteria and plaque you can’t get to or see when brushing your teeth. A lot of mouthwashes contain alcohol which you should be aware of if you have children… or want a cheap night out (we’re joking, do not drink your mouthwash under any circumstances, it is very dangerous).
5. It’s up to You
Nobody can make you do these things but it is vital that you do look after your teeth and gums. And it’s not just about following the above steps. At the risk of sounding like your mum you should also limit your intake of sugary foods as well as between-meal snacks. Of course, it is imperative that you go to the dentist every six months for a check-up too.
If like us you are now feeling around your teeth with your tongue or rushing to the mirror to have a good look at your gums, maybe it’s time to pay a bit more attention to your dental health. Go on, book an appointment with your dentist now and get a healthy smile that you can be proud of!
