Bad news if you like hummus, as prices are set to rise

Nooooo!

Laura Holland

Eat as much hummus as you can, or want, because prices are set to increase.

Shoppers may have noticed an increase already on the humble tub of hummus, which is all down to the shortage of chickpeas. In the UK, the prices have already rise by 33percent, going from £1.14 to £1.47.

Tasneem Backhouse, of EHL Ingredients, told The Independent, that the increase began last year and it still rising:

“Chickpea prices increased during 2017 and remain high.

Demand is strong from every market and currently there isn’t enough supply to go around. This is driven by poor crops in some of the main producing origin nations over the past 12 months.”

This is likely to affect other chickpea dishes if the shortage continues. Falafels, tinned chickpeas and many more items could be affected.

At least with tinned variations, you can stock up, but it’s harder to hoard hummus as it’s fresh and only has a short shelf life.
