Earlier this week we brought you the heart warming story of a young boy who broke his arm and asked for a pink cast in support of breast cancer month, telling the Doctor there was no such thing boy or girl colours. Well today we have another lovely story, that reminds us just how much society is changing for the better.
Coy Mathis cried in protest when the teacher in her first-grade class asked her to stand in the boys line as the children queued to use the toilet.
Born a triplet with two sisters, Coy would refuse to leave her home in boys clothing, her parents accepted her identity and she was diagnosed with ‘gender identity disorder.’
Coy’s parents filed a complaint to the Colorado Civil Rights Division after the incident and withdrew their children from the school. The court ruled that Coy denied “full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages or accommodations in a place of public accommodation due to sex and sexual orientation.”
The Coy Family after their court victory.
Coy’s mother said that she and her family are “so happy knowing what this means for her future.”
“Unfortunately at 6, she already knows some people don’t like her just because of who she is.”
Joni Moor, the founder of Change Up Girls, a transgender organisation supported the Coy Family’s decision to take against the school saying, “I am just like her in a way… Its is a long process for anyone to realise who they are, good for her.”
