With Holly Willoughby and Frank Lampard set to join the ranks of celebrity children’s authors, a new survey has revealed that tales penned by new mum, author and actress, Amy Huberman, would be of most interest to Irish parents.
Voted for by over one in three parents (34%), Amy was closely followed by Father Ted’s Pauline McLynn (26%) and dad of twins, Westlife’s Nicky Byrne, who received 15% of votes. The straight-talking former Manchester United captain and football pundit, Roy Keane, received 3% of votes and President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, was voted for by 9% of parents polled.
Bandon native and national TV star, Graham Norton topped the poll for personalities that parents would most like to read to their child, with over one in four parents voting for the flamboyant presenter (26%). One Direction’s Niall Norton was next up with 17% of the votes, followed by Brian O’Driscoll (12%). Other suggestions included the Duchess of Cambridge, Jedward and Ryan Tubridy.
In a light-hearted look at celebrity children’s story telling and writing, the survey, carried out by MyKidsTime.ie and yogurt brand, Munch Bunch® also revealed that only 7% of parents are more likely to buy a book for their child if written by someone famous.
Dad of two with one more on the way, Nicky Byrne was a popular choice
For budding novelists, this research highlights the importance of the story. That’s one of the reasons why Munch Bunch® has launched its annual search for undiscovered writers of children’s short stories. In its third year, Munch Bunch® has teamed with the Reading Association of Ireland and MyKidsTime.ie to give storytellers the opportunity to put pen to paper and be in with a chance of winning €1,000.
The Irish research also found out that the main barriers for parents in writing a short children’s story are ‘no previous experience’ (35%) or ‘lack of confidence (22%). Unsurprisingly, ‘time’ was the third most popular reason, cited by 18% of parents.
Director of MyKidsTime.ie and Munch Time Ireland judge, Jill Holtz, adds:
“We’re a creative nation and Munch Time Ireland offers promising Irish authors a platform to showcase their short stories. Don’t let a lack of confidence or experience hold you back from entering as this competition is all about uncovering new talent, such as mum of four, Veronica Casey, from Loughlinstown, who won Munch Time Ireland 2012.”
Munch Time Ireland is seeking entries from creative Mums, Dads and Grandparents, or indeed anyone who has a magical story to tell that young children will love. The closing date for entries is midnight on 31st May 2013. €1000 will be awarded to the winning story with two runners-up receiving €500 each.
