Now that the wrapping has been discarded and there are ‘no more sleeps’ to Santa’s visit, parents face a new challenge – keeping children entertained for the rest of their holidays. It’s something easier said than done, so we’ve got some top tips for making the most of the festive fun, without driving the whole family mad in the process!
Get out and about
Christmas is expensive enough without parents having to worry about additional costs, but days out can be done cheaply enough if you’re clever about planning. Many cinemas have morning clubs at weekend where recent movies are shown for a greatly reduced fee. Check out any free museums etc. in your area, or make your own history trail, taking them around to see local landmarks.
Own goals
Don’t use the colder weather as an excuse to skip some much-valued exercise. Wrap up warm and get out there with your kids for a game or two. The novelty of having you join in will make it twice as much fun for them, and the fresh air will do you all the world of good. Plus, the physical activity will help ensure a good night’s sleep for everyone.
Make a game of it
The classics are the best. Amongst the games consoles, dolls and make-believe paraphernalia under the tree this year, make room for a Monopoly or Cluedo, then sit down as a family to enjoy. They might be as simple as it comes, but it’s fun for all the family and a good game can pass hours without you even realising.
Share the load
Pair up with the parents of your children’s friends to give each other a break. Take in your child’s two besties for a day, safe in the knowledge that their super grateful parents will do the same for you. The children will entertain each other, and you can get a much-valued break.
Home cinema
The TV set is not the enemy. As long as your small ones are getting some exercise too, a few hours on the couch won’t hurt then. Make a home cinema by allowing them to make a ‘fort’ in the living room, pop some homemade popcorn and settle down for a marathon of your favourite Disney classics. (Admit it, you’ll probably enjoy this one even more than they will.)
Closet clearout
Now that they’re laden down with new toys and Christmas outfits, it’s a really good time to tell your children about those who have less, and gently suggest they might want to help. You can make cleaning up and clearing out a fun activity with your little helpers on hand.
