Long-standing Today FM producer Jenny Kelly has announced that she is “hanging up her microphone”.

Jenny, who works alongside her husband Ray D’Arcy on the mid-morning show bearing his name, explained how she was leaving the station to concentrate on being a full-time mother to the couple’s children.

Responding to an email from Elaine, who was looking for ideas to fill up three months with volunteer work, D’Arcy spoke about how much he’d love to have three months off, then addressing his wife, said: “You’re off. You’re going to be off forever.”

An audibly shocked Jenny responded: “I am. We actually haven’t said that on air yet, but yes, that’s the truth.”

Jenny added that the move would come “very soon”, and

told listeners she had been “thinking long and hard about it” after coming back to work in January following maternity leave. She told fans of the show that she had decided after fourteen years in her position that she wanted to spend more time with her children.

“They’re only young for a very short while, that’s what I kept saying”, she said, becoming emotional. Kelly added that she felt very lucky to be in a position where she could make that decision.

The couple have two children: Kate, seven, and Tom, who will turn two next month. They married last year after first meeting in Today FM back in 2000.

Both Ray and Jenny admitted to tearing up during the emotional chat, and Jenny later took to her Twitter account to say she’s been caught “off guard” by the tribute.
