Surgeons in London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital have successfully separated conjoined twin sisters hours after their birth.

The twins, who were joined at the abdomen and shared intestines, were separated in a four hour-long operation according to Sky News.

Rosie and Ruby are now recovering and their mum Angela revealed that they are lovely, “bubbly babies.”

Mrs Formosa, from Bexleyheath, Kent, said: “Between 16 and 20 weeks we found out that they were joined. I didn’t know what to think. I was shocked and I felt sad.

“We didn’t know what to expect until they were born. The doctors could not tell where they were connected.”

Although surgeons usually wait until conjoined twins are a few months old before they operate, a structural abnormality caused a blockage in the intestine, which called for emergency surgery.

Professor Agostino Pierro, who led the team said: “The twins were very small because they were so young. But they are doing very well.”

He added: “The babies will need further treatment in the future but we expect that they will both be able to lead happy and normal lives.”
