This month, Netflix released the new documentary Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story, currently the number one programme in Ireland.
The Netflix synopsis reads:
“Recently discovered police recordings and first-person accounts tell the story of Fred and Rose West, two of the UK's most prolific murderers.”
According to the BBC, the documentary details how they "tortured, raped and murdered an unknown number of women in Gloucester between 1967 and 1987.”
The documentary centres on the victims' families and how Gloucestershire Constabulary uncovered the crimes.
According to Tudum by Netflix, Fred and Rose West were a married British couple living in Gloucester, England, with their 10 children and tenants renting a spare room.
"In 1994 in Gloucester, England, police visited 25 Cromwell Street, acting on a tip from social services regarding a horrifying rumor they were told by the children of the couple who lived there, Fred and Rose West."
"If they misbehaved, the children said, they’d end up under the patio like their sister, Heather, who had not been seen since 1986."
"Police would eventually uncover not only the murdered and dismembered remains of Heather, but also eight additional bodies buried in the garden and cellar."
Fred West had described their relationship as "two people acting as one" to the police.
According to Netflix:
“But their outwardly loving life hid a shared sexual sadomasochism that began with Fred asking Rose to have sex with other men as he watched from another room, and eventually led to the kidnapping, torture, rape, killing, and dismemberment of 12 people.”
Fred West died by suicide in prison a month before pretrial proceedings.
Rose West was found guilty of 10 murders and was sentenced to life in prison, but “continues to maintain her innocence”.
Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story is on Netflix now.
