The Movie Stars are Back in Town: Jameson Dublin International Film Festival 2013

From the 14th to the 24th of February, the tenth annual Jameson Dublin International Film Festival will screen the best in Irish and International cinema with over 130 films and events.

Sue Murphy

Now in it’s eleventh year, the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival is arguably one of the most important cultural events of the calendar year. Since its establishment in 2003, the festival has screened the best in Irish and International cinema, inviting some of the most high profile of Hollywood’s talent and firming placing Ireland on the movie map.

The programme for 2013 is just as exciting as previous years, with the news being released early this year that Danny DeVito would be a special guest at the festival. In honour of the legendary Hollywood actor who will receive the Volta, JDIFF’s own award for a lifetime achievement in cinema, there will be screenings of Hollywood classics War of the Roses and Throw Momma from the Train.

Other guests attending the festival will include Cillian Murphy who stars in Rufus Norris’ feature debut alongside Tim Roth, the Hollywood great, who will also be in attendance for the event. One of the most sought after tickets for the festival is to Joss Whedon’s take on the Shakespeare classic Much Ado about Nothing. The revered creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and director of the critically lauded Avengers Assemble will also be in attendance at the event. The festival will also welcome the iconic Frank Langella, the wonderful actor who played Nixon in Frost/Nixon, for his new role as a retired burglar in Robot and Frank.

Danny DeVito will be attending events at the festival this year

One of the most highly anticipated events every year is the Jameson Cult Film Club which will screen the much loved classic LA Confidential which was robbed of an Oscar for Best Film in 1998. Mr. DeVito will also be in attendance for an event that has had the highest calibre of guests including Kevin Spacey for The Usual Suspects and Michael Madsen for Reservoir Dogs. The event will be followed by a Q&A with DeVito.

Although the talent can steal the limelight on red carpets throughout the city, it is worth noting that the festival is also a showcase of up and coming talent and is a huge supporter of film in Ireland. The Programme Director Grainne Humphreys lives and breathes film and this translates across to a programme that includes workshops, documentaries, awards, funding in the form of the Untitled project and Screen Test which was opened by the wonderful Domhnall Gleeson in 2012.

There is something for everyone in the JDIFF programme ranging from the timeless classic Sunset Boulevard to the eerie new Stoker and back to Irish productions like the Moth Diaries directed by the hugely talented Mary Harron of American Psycho fame.
