So it’s official, The Great British Bake Off as we know is gone. First Mel and Sue left, then Mary Berry confirmed this morning that she would be leaving.

That only left Paul, who has agreed to move to Channel 4 when it comes back in a new form. It does beg the question though why he would go without Mary and the gang.

And now we might know why. Mary Berry was reportedly offered £7 million to return to the show. Yes, £7,000,000. So, if she was being offered that amount, chances are so was Paul.

Popbitch is reporting this whopping amount but it hasn’t been confirmed by Channel 4 or the production company behind the show, Love Productions.

Mary released this statement about leaving the show which broke all GBBO fan’s hearts:

“My decision to stay with the BBC is out of loyalty to them, as they have nurtured me, and the show, that was a unique and brilliant format from day one

“What a privilege and honour it has been to be part of seven years of magic in a tent. I am just sad for the audience who may not be ready for change, I hope they understand my decision.”

“The Bake Off family – Paul, Mel and Sue have given me so much joy and laughter.

“I wish the programme, crew and future bakers every possible success and I am so very sad not to be a part of it. Farewell to soggy bottoms.”

Interestingly, Paul never even thanked Mary in his statement on the show, saying:

“I want to thank the BBC and Mel and Sue for making my time in the tent great fun and really rewarding.”
