A sequel to Mary Poppins Returns is in the ‘early stages’

It was one of the most highly anticipated films of the last year.

So it’s no wonder that fans have already been hoping for a sequel to Mary Poppins Returns – and, thankfully, it looks like they may get their wish.

Director Rob Marshall revealed that the folks behind the film are in the “early stages” of working on a follow up film.

He told The Sun

“It is early stages but I will say right now that there were eight books, so there’s a lot of great material still to mine.

“That’s what we worked from, those incredible eight books of P.L. Travers. So, you know…”

He also dropped a hint that the franchise could be sticking around for awhile, following in the footsteps of 007 and Star Wars.

He added:

“Listen, how many Star Wars films have there been, you know what I mean?

“Or James Bond films. If there’s a great character and story to tell, why not?”

John DeLuca, who produced the film, also said he thinks another film would happen as he praised the performance of Emily Blunt, who took on the role of the iconic nanny.

The part was originally made famous by Julie Andrews, who played Poppins in 1964.

He said:

“Emily does light up when she speaks to me about it. And if the people want it, I think it will happen.”
