Joe’s back.
After becoming a bonafide sensation which caused some people to have very strange feelings towards the main character, it came as no surprise to learn that You was renewed for a second season.
In case you haven’t seen the show, You follows a stalker named Joe (Penn Badgley) as he obsesses over an innocent woman that he meets in the bookstore he works in. Joe starts off by peering in her window at night, reading her emails and whatnot, but he quickly escalates to killing her ex-boyfriends and best friends, in a desperate attempt to have her all for himself.
It’s trashy, it’s sexy, it’s easy to see why it has done so well.
Despite the fact that Joe is basically Dennis from Always Sunny, Season Two will be a Netflix exclusive, with a late 2019/early 2020 release date anticipated.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Penn Badgley said that he’s currently three months deep into production on Season 2 before adding that the story “does change and it is more expansive.”
In terms of the plot, the story is set to loosely follow the second novel in the series by Caroline Kepnes, titled Hidden Bodies. However, considering the TV adaptation of You has already made some divergences from the original story, we can probably assume they will continue to continue this trend.
We know that the much-lusted-after Joe will be back, and we can probably count on his “Oh, we thought she was dead?” ex, Candace (Ambyr Childers) to be back, too.
On top of that, another new arrival will be Joe’s new love-interest, named… eh… Love. She’ll be played by The Haunting Of Hill House’s Victoria Pedretti and the character will be “an aspiring chef working as a produce manager in a high-end grocery store.”
During his chat with Entertainment Tonight, Badgley also said that Joe’s decision to kill Beck will play a part in the new season.
“There’s a revisitation of that with Joe in the second episode of the second season, where you get to see a bit more of the hard reality of what he did to her. Whereas you’re sort of, for better or worse, mercifully saved from seeing that in the first season. That always haunts me, thinking of Beck. It’s like, ‘You really did that in the first season, and we’re still going, and people really like this guy?!’ That’s disturbing. In his mind, she’s not even dead.
“I’m not giving you some kind of spoiler, she’s dead. In his mind, everyone’s still alive because the pain that he feels he suffered at their hand is very much still alive.”
Aside from this, the actor said that the first two episodes of Season 2 are “testing very well” and that “it’s very much the same show.”
