Peaky Blinders creator calls the plot for Season 5 ‘chilling’ as more details revealed

Throughout the history of Peaky Blinders, we've seen some pretty brutal and horrific stuff like Arthur beating a young man to death with his own hands, Tommy torturing Vicente Changretta, and the death of John. The violence and brutality is a massive part of the show but in Season 5, Steven Knight has said that the show will examine something that's far more chilling, the rise of populism, fascism, racism. Speaking at a screening that took place at the BFI Southbank, the writer/creator said that the storyline for Season 5 extremely timely and “fortunate for us and unfortunate for the world. " He adds: "The things that were happening in the time we are setting the series have an unbelievable relevance to what’s going on now: the rise of populism, fascism, racism. What I hope the experience one might take from this is what was the consequence of what happened the last time. Nine years later, there was a world war.” In Season 5 of Peaky Blinders, “People will think it’s staggering, or they’ll think we made it up. But the language and phrases are the same. It’s quite chilling," as reported by Deadline. Elsewhere, the creator of the beloved gangster drama has told fans to be prepared for “shocks and surprises to come." In terms of what fans can expect to see in the new season, we know that the rise of fascism in Europe and the Wall Street Crash will play a role.

The official synopsis states: "Series five of Steven Knight's crime family saga finds the world thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929. Opportunity and misfortune are everywhere. When Tommy Shelby MP is approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain, he realises that his response will affect not just his family's future but that of the entire nation."

At present, no official launch date has been announced by the BBC but we expect confirmation very soon. If the reactions to the first episode are anything to go by, we're in for a treat.
