Netflix’s new Scandi-crime thriller Quicksand looks dirty, deceptive, and really dark

Jade Hayden

Giz it.

If there’s one thing the Scandinavians do famously well, it’s crime.

Not committing it no, but depicting it on the big screen, on TV, and in novels that are sure to equal parts scar and enthral you.

Think The Bridge, think Bordertown, think all of the other bits that the Scandis have brought to the table over recent years.

Quicksand looks set to be on a similar enough vibe in terms of dirtiness, deception, and darkness – and in fairness, it’s about a teenager who suddenly finds herself on trial for murder so, you know, we’d expect nothing else.

Based on the book Störst av Allt by Malin Persson Giolito, the story begins with a mass shooting in a school in one of Stockholm’s wealthiest suburbs.

At the centre of it all is a girl named Maja, who is subsequently arrested for the crime. But as with true crime dramas, not all is as it seems.

The rest of the series goes back over the weeks and months before the shooting, documenting Maja’s relationship with another student from a rather dysfunctional family who is definitely involved in some shady shit that absolutely influences the outcome of the story.

Can’t wait.

Quicksand will be available to stream on Netflix from April 5.
