Sales of Taylor Swift’s new album 1989 rocketed in its first week, selling more than any other album has done in its first week since 2002.
The album has sold 1.28 million copies since its release – that’s almost two per second - a number which hasn’t been topped since Eminen’s album The Eminem Show in 2002 which sold 1.322 million copies.
The figures, revealed this week by Nielsen SoundScan, also showed that the album shot straight into the number one spot of the Billboard 200 albums chart.
1989 is Taylor’s third album following on from Red and Speak Now. She is the first act to have three albums sell over a million copies in a week.
It was also revealed this week that the singer has requested that Spotify no longer stream her music.
“We were both young when we first saw you, but now there’s more than 40 million of us who want you to stay, stay, stay. It’s a love story baby. Just say yes,” read a statement from Spotify, who also revealed that Taylor’s song Shake it Off was the most-played song on Spotify last week.
