We’ve had Bonnie Tyler and Cascada confirmed for this year and last year good old Engelbert Humpledinck made his Eurovision appearance... Break out that dry ice, back comb that hair, we are making that Eurovision stage the last refuge of the washed-up singer, and we've got some suggestions for who should try it next.
1. Belinda Carlisle
Contrary to popular belief, Belinda is still heavily involved in the music industry. She released a solo album called Viola in 2007 and has been touring consistently, sometimes with her original band The Go-Gos. We think to really kickstart a high-profile comeback Belinda, you should pen an amazing number, ideally as similar to Heaven is a Place on Earth as is humanly possible.
2. Tiffany
Another 80’s queen, Tiffany has made several attempts to crack the music industry again after she entered semi-retirement in 1988. This included an appearance in Playboy in 2002 and various reality shows, aptly entitled Hit Me, Baby, One More Time. Tiffany, the Eurovision stage welcomes you.
3. Rick Astley
Astley is another one of those singers who tried to make the big time again in late 2000’s. The singer was a global success with Never Gonna Give You Up, a song which we think would do particularly well in a Eurovision envoirnment, i.e. re-write the lyrics with a different hook.
4. Whigfield
Cheesy dance routine? Check. Really bad beat? Check. Silly lyrics? Check. Whigfield’s Saturday Night was a pop sensation. We’re pretty sure her writing team could come up with something that would blow the Eurovision away. If not, they could at least come up with a song that would let her do that dance routine again.
5. Kim Wilde
Kim Wilde also made a “return to pop” in 2001, the one problem being she would never eclipse the 80’s classic, Kids in America ever again. That’s not to say that Kim is not talented; we think her glorious 80’s-esque music would definitely find a home at our favourite song contest. You never know Kim, it could turn your career around.
6. Lionel Richie
Ok, we know this is wishful thinking on our behalf and we are well aware that Lionel is far from washed up but doesn’t it seem like the Eurovision is exactly where Lionel should be?
