Miley Cyrus faces backlash for controversial comments on hip-hop music

If you'll cast your mind back to 2013, you'll remember a short-lived scandal following a Miley Cyrus performance at the VMAs. Twerking was involved.

It was at that time that Cyrus had chosen to shed her Hannah Montana/Disney persona and embrace elements of hip-hop culture in her music. She released Bangerz, an album that featured verses from high-profile rappers like Future, Big Sean, Nelly and French Montana. Her hit single We Can't Stop was even produced by hip-hop super-producer Mike WiLL Made-It. Now it seems Miley has done something of a 180 on the genre, prompting accusations that she simply used hip-hop culture to gain a foothold in the music industry, push her career forward and then discard it once she had gotten what she wanted.

Speaking with Billboard, Miley said:

"I also love that new Kendrick song Humble: ‘Show me somethin’ natural like ass with some stretch marks.’ I love that because it’s not ‘Come sit on my dick, suck on my cock.’ I can’t listen to that anymore.” “That’s what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little. It was too much ‘Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my cock’—I am so not that." “That became a thing, where people said I was taking advantage of black culture, and with Mike—what the fuck? That wasn’t true. Those were the dancers I liked!”
