Award-Winning French Film Amélie to Become Musical on Broadway

Oscar-nominated movie Amélie, is set to become a musical on Broadway.

The 2001 French film, which starred Audrey Tautou, is going to have a musical adaption with American composer Dan Messe writing the score.

The composer will be collaborating with playwright Craig Lucas and fellow composer Nathan Tysen.

For those unfamiliar with the plot, Amélie tells the story of a young French girl on a personal mission to make others happy. The film shot Audrey Tautou to fame and she was praised for her shy performance.

Composer Messe has in fact been a fan of the Jean-Pierre Jeunet film, describing Yann Tiersen's original film music as "one of the best movie scores there is," and that "It's one of the reasons why I love the film."

However he stressed that the music would be different from the movie.

"I'm not interested in doing Parisian music. I don't think I'm even going to use accordion in my score” he said.

"The music sounds like mine. But certainly, I'm not playing up the Americana elements either. I'm not having pedal steel and fiddle, but it'll be hyper-romantic and playful more than anything."

The French film won four Cesar Awards and was nominated for five Oscars, including best foreign language film.
