Remember Dale’s Supermarket Sweep?
Well, it looks like it’s coming back. According to production company FreMantleMedia, they have acquired the rights to the programme globally and have every intention to revive the classic show and bring it back.
“The time is ripe to bring back this all-time favourite gameshow which has travelled with such success over the years,” said Vasha Wallace, EVP of Global Acquisitions and Development.
“Now, modern technology allows us the opportunity to update the show, making it relevant for a 21st century audience” she added.
The show which was first created in 1960, didn’t land on Irish screens until 1993 and ran until 2001.
Incase you haven’t seen Supermarket Sweep (it’s time to binge watch stat), basically the game consists of two to three teams located in a supermarket. The teams are working together to solve riddles and answer questions posed by TV host Dale Winton. The quicker they are answering questions, the more time they get on the supermarket floor in the “Big Sweep”. In the “Big Sweep”, the teams run around the supermarket floor with trollies, trying to collect as many items as possible and the team with the most valuable items, that clocks up the highest total enters the “Super Sweep” similar to the “Big Sweep” but with large prizes up for grabs.
The game reminds me of a retro video game, as there is penalties for dropping items out of your kart, bonuses for grabbing certain items and the chance of winning extra time on the clock.
