The Irish festival is often met with backlash every year, but viewers continue to tune into the show in their droves.
It's part of Irish tradition, but many people have slated the contest for being 'outdated' and often compared it to 'the lovely girls' competition from Father Ted.
The backlash this year was quite immense, but host Kathryn Thomas said the Rose of Tralee is so different these days.
She told Extra.ie:
"Every year, there are the same people who spout the same old tropes about the festival, saying 'it’s outdated” or it’s a “lovely girls” or whatever. But it’s none of those things."
She added, "The Rose of Tralee is a national institution. It’s foremost a celebration of women, our culture, our heritage, and the diaspora."
Kathryn also stressed that the women taking part in the Rose of Tralee are incredible role models.
"We had four young mothers, we had an electrician, we had women from all across the spectrum who were confident, independent, fun, and yes, they all looked beautiful. So that is something that should be celebrated, not denigrated."
It may be questioned by some viewers, but over half a million viewers watched as Katelyn Cummins was crowned 2025 International Rose of Tralee.
Group Head of Entertainment and Music for RTÉ, Alan Tyler said:
“The Rose of Tralee remains one of Ireland’s most cherished cultural celebrations, and it’s incredible to see it embraced by audiences not just at home, but around the world.
"Whether on television, online, or across social media, this festival continues to captivate viewers, connecting generations and communities in a uniquely Irish way.”
