Who the hell is Gary?
There has been no shortage of Harry Potter news in the past few weeks, much to the delight of die-hard fans.
So naturally people were pretty excited yesterday when J.K Rowling released a number of early sketches she had drawn when writing the hugely popular series.
She shared the images on the official website for all things Hogwarts, Pottermore.
She shared a sketch of a game of Quidditch.
This adorable image of the Weasleys:
And a sketch of Hagrid, Dumbledore and McGonagall holding baby Harry.
But the one image that people were most interested in is of a scene in the Philosophers stone, “Chap 7. Draco Duel”.
The image features Harry, Hermione, Ron, Neville and… Gary.
This had a lot of people wondering who the hell Gary was and where he disappeared to.

In true Rowling fashion, the author responded on twitter to clear up any confusion.
Dean Thomas was called Gary in the first draft of Philosopher's Stone. I renamed him after a boy I knew! https://t.co/Aq8A6GZGvf

So it turns out, Gary wasn’t some mysterious character that never got to see the light of day, she just renamed him Dean.
