Is your pup on the list?
Ireland’s top dog names for 2021 have been revealed by Petmania.
The Irish-owned pet retailer surveyed over 1,600 dog owners in Ireland throughout September.
Topping the list is Luna, with last year’s winner, Bailey, dropping down to second place.
Bella came in at third for the first year ever, followed by another newbie, Cooper, in fourth place.
The ever-popular Teddy still remains high up on the list of top names, claiming fifth place this year.
Petmania also found that many paw parents are starting to name their pups after mythical creatures like Loki and Zeus, while others were opting for classy designer names like Dior and Coco.
It also revealed that golden retrievers are Ireland’s most popular breed of dog. Other favoured breeds included Labradors, Jack Russells, German Shepherds, and Cockapoos.
As part of the survey, pet owners could also put their dogs in the running for Puppy of the Year 2021.
Orca, a Great Dane from Sligo, was awarded the title, which saw himself and his owner win €1,500 worth of prizes. Orca was selected due to his heartwarming story.
Orca’s owner Jo Gurney helps rescue whales, dolphins and seals and the dog plays a big role in helping Jo do so. He is in training and attending classes that will enable him to search for and rescue people some day.
“We had an overwhelming entry this year with over 1,500 much-loved puppies entering our Puppy of the Year,” Emily Miller of Petmania Ireland said when the winner was announced.
“The 14 finalists were all winners and with their families will represent their local Petmania store magnificently for the next 12 months. Choosing a winner was not easy but after a lot of consideration, the decision was unanimous that Orca from Sligo was the outstanding puppy this year.
“Orca is training to be a rescue dog and his proud pet parent Jo says that Orca is already making great strides at this young age.”
What a good boy!
