Here’s what we know about the plot of ‘The Good Wife’ spin-off TV series

Bye Alicia, hello Diane.

We’re still mourning the loss of The Good Wife earlier this year.

It was long one of TV’s best, and most under-appreciated, shows. The legal/political drama wrapped up during the summer after seven seasons, and the only consolation for devastated fans has been the news that a sort-of sequel to The Good Wife is in the works for next year.

The as-yet untitled TV series won’t feature Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies), certainly not as a central character anyway.

Instead, the new show will be centred around Alicia’s on-off friend and nemesis Diane Lockhart (played by Christine Baranski).

Over the weekend, we got more details about the premise of the new series. It will be set one year on from the controversial final episode of the The Good Wife.

The action kicks off when a huge financial scam wipes out Diane’s savings, forcing her out of her job as a partner at Lockhart & Lee. She then gets a role at another Chicago law firm working alongside Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo), who joined the cast in the final season of The Good Wife and quickly became a fan favourite.

There are further Good Wife connections to the planned series that should reassure fans. It is being co-created and executive produced by Michelle and Robert King, who created and wrote most of The Good Wife, while another of the series’ popular recurring characters, Marissa Gold (played by Sarah Steele), will also be joining the cast.

According to Deadline, Marissa’s role in the new show will be as “a scattered millennial who begins as Diane Lockhart’s secretary, but finds she has a knack for investigating.”

So far, a 10-episode series has been commissioned and is due to start airing in the US next February.
