Every week, we in Her.ie towers will provide you with a blast from the past, a film that you cannot live without but nor should you, the classic film that you simply need to watch.
This week, we take a look at the timeless and hilarious classic that is Some Like It Hot.
Starring the inimitable Marilyn Monroe as Sugar Kane Kowalczyk, the film revolves around two musicians who end up out on the road with a women's group after they witness a murder. In order to stay alive and not be recognised, the pair dress up as women and, of course, befriend the wonderful Sugar Kane. However, not everything goes according to plan when Joe discovers that he is in love with her.
Hailed as one of the great classic comedies of our time, Some Like It Hot is one of the most charming and wonderful films you will ever see. Marilyn is simply perfection as Sugar Cane, vulnerable, sweet, charming, funny and extremely talented, the camera is clearly drawn to her for most of the film. Her performance of "I Want To Be Loved By You" is so beautiful and sweet, you will be unable to take your eyes off her. Her performance is completely underrated, her comic timing immaculate.
Lemmon and Curtis are simply brilliant as the terrible twosome, their over-and-back is stunning; they literally seem to finish each other's lines. Their dedication to their roles certainly shines through, particularly with costuming and their flawless ability to run around in heels.
Most of the film is played for laughs but there is a sentimental love story involved here and let's be fair, who could not fall in love with Marilyn Monroe? The script is flawless with some of the best gags the silver screen has witnessed.
"Jerry: Have I got things to tell you!
Joe: What happened?
Jerry: I'm engaged.
Joe: Congratulations. Who's the lucky girl?
Jerry: I am!"
However, the project was dogged by difficulties offscreen with Marilyn Monroe. She continually forgot her lines, they even had to be written on a blackboard, was late to set constantly and on occasion, refused to actually come to the set. Monroe was actually pregnant during the filming for Some Like It Hot.
If you haven't seen it, you simply must. This scene alone will win you over.
