From slashers to classics, we've rounded up the best Halloween movies for a ‘scary’ night in this weekend.
Over on the Her desk we love nothing more than an adrenaline-pumping horror – from originals to cult classics – we love them all. But, when we kick back to watch a scary flick, we're looking for something that will make us scream out-loud and transform our movie experience.
So grab the popcorn, dim the lights and get ready to scare yourself senseless with these five horrors that are all available on Virgin TV On Demand this Halloween.
1. It Comes at Night
Ever since It Comes at Night made its cinema debut earlier this year, it's been dubbed the ‘scariest movie of 2017’.
Telling the story of a family trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic America after a virus wiped out the majority of the population, this is a movie for people who want to feel their entire brain light up with horror.
This is unlike any horror you’ve seen before and won’t want to watch it alone.
2. Scream
Scream is a 1996 slasher film directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson. Itwas credited with revitalising the horror genre in the 90s and became so popular it spawned a series of sequels and inspired a large number of similar films.
One thing’s for sure: Scream wasn’t afraid to live in the era it was created in – a cinematic snapshot of 1996. From their telephones to Courteney Cox’s bright yellow suit in her character Gale Weathers' first scene, the movie happily screams the ‘90s and you'll love it because of it.
It has always been a firm favourite of ours to watch at this time of year.
3. Hocus Pocus
You may not have screamed watching this flick since you were about four but there isn't a gal out there who doesn't love this classic.
The beloved 1993 Disney movie starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy and Bette Midler as zany Salem witches is an all-round favourite and a Halloween movie sesh wouldn't be the same without it.
4. Raw
Not one for the squeamish, Raw is a French-Belgian horror drama about a young vegetarian whose taste for human flesh is brought out after she undergoes a carnivorous hazing ritual at vet school.
As well as totally unnerving, the movie is critically acclaimed; it won the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) prize at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
5. I Know What You Did Last Summer
This is our guilty pleasure. It may not be as good as Scream, but this tale of teens and a murderous fisherman out for revenge deserves a watch.
I Know What You Did Last Summer plays up the teen drama as four friends revisit a horrible crime they were involved in a year before. It's a cracking cast with the likes of Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillipe and Freddie Prinze jr taking centre stage.
So, if you’re after a fun, genuinely scary example of 90s slasher film that involves brutal killings and parties, then you could do worse than watching this. Oh, and Ryan Phillippe spends a lot of time in a towel.
