Apple TV+ has released the first trailer for Flora and Son, a new Irish comedy-drama from writer-director John Carney (Once, Sing Street) that stars Bad Sisters’ Eve Hewson.

The movie follows a single mom named Flora (Hewson), who is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max (newcomer Orén Kinlan).

After Max has a run-in with the Gardaí, Flora is encouraged to find her son a hobby.

Discovering an old guitar in a skip, she believes that music may be the answer and winds up seeking the services of an LA-based online guitar teacher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).

Also featuring amongst its cast Don Wycherley and Jack Reynor, Flora and Son premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews, with the film currently holding a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Following the Sundance screening, Apple TV+ acquired the distribution rights to the comedy-drama for a reported figure of just under $20 million, suggesting the streaming giant has high hopes for the project.

This has led some to ponder whether the movie could be a potential player at next year’s Oscars.

Flora and Son will be released in Irish cinemas on 23 February 2024.
