Albert Square as you know it may soon be no more.
BBC bosses are planning to “demolish” the set of EastEnders following the build of a bigger version of the iconic fictional location.
The current set in North London has been home to the soap for 30 years, but head honchos at the British national broadcaster have made plans for a new Albert Square that is 20 per cent bigger in size and will include new houses and a high street as well as a new underground station.
The Mail On Sunday reports that documents submitted to Hertsmere Borough Council last month show the BBC want create a new Albert Square in order to “achieve a quality and character of finish to accommodate high-definition technology film recording”.
The documents also that the “BBC’s current intention is that following completion, the existing EastEnders set will be demolished.”
The work on the set is expected to be completed in 2018.
EastEnders executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins said: “This is a really exciting project and firmly demonstrates the BBC’s commitment to the future of EastEnders.
“We have ambitious plans for the show and the new exterior set will help bring those to life and better reflect the East End of London on screen for audiences.”
