Drive-in movies are finally coming to the West this month

Date night sorted.

Anna O'Rourke

There’s something unbelievably soothing about sitting in a parked car.

Catching up with someone on the phone; pigging out with your drive-through; lingering at the end of a date that you don’t really want to end; staring out into space listening to Spotify and pretending you’re in a music video – the humble parked car is good for the soul.

Now folks in the west will be able to enjoy watching movies in their cars too as a drive-in experience is coming to Shannon in Clare.

On Saturday April 21 and Sunday April 22, you can pull in to Shannon Airport and take in a movie plus enjoy all of the traditional elements of a drive-in.

Grab chips and dips, burgers, hot dogs, pizzas, popcorn and drinks and choose from cult classics like Dirty Dancing; Back to the Future, E.T. and Jaws or kids’ films Planes and Up.

The movies will be shown on an LED screen and you’ll be able to tune in the sound on your car radio.

“Shannon Airport was the first gateway to the US from Ireland so we felt it was fitting to bring what is very much an American experience to Shannon by way of our drive-in movies,” said Ryan O’ Neill, CEO of Retro Drive-in Movies.

“There is a really special atmosphere on the night as people get to sample something we grew up watching on TV but never really had the opportunity to try.”

Tickets cost €29.90 per car plus booking fee and are available from RetroDrivein.ie
