Sienna was set to star in a cameo role.
Sienna played the role of Catherine Greig, whom she acknowledged was "not a leading role" but was girlfriend to Johnny Depp's character Bulger.
Speaking about the decision to axe Sienna's scenes, director Scott Cooper revealed it was nothing personal and "came down to narrative choices", noting that Bulger's years with his gangster girlfriend were "less dramatic" than other scenes.
Sienna mastered a Boston accent for the part.
Speaking to Boston.com about her role previously, Sienna said: “She was quite a character from South Boston.
“The accent was something I really focused on because playing someone from Southie, you don’t want to mess that up. Hopefully I’ve managed to pull that off.”
