Brooklyn Leads The Way With Six BAFTA Nominations

Ellen Tannam

This year’s British Academy Film Awards have been announced, and the Irish contingent have once again put out a strong showing.

The ceremony will take place on February 14th, at the Royal Opera House in London. Carol and Bridge Of Spies were both the highest nominated films with 9 each, and Mad Max: Fury Road follows with seven nods.

Brooklyn, starring our own Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson has received six nominations: Outstanding British Film, Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design and MakeUp & Hair, with a nod for Saoirse Ronan in Leading Actress and Julie Walters in Supporting Actress.

Our favourite Kerryman, Michael Fassbender heads the Lead Actor category being nominated for his performance in Steve Jobs, along with Bryan Cranston, Eddie Redmayne, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon.

The actresses joining Saoirse in her category include Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), Brie Larson (Room), Cate Blanchett (Carol), Maggie Smith (The Lady In The Van), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn). Saoirse already won a Best Actress award quite recently from the New York Critic’s Circle, so it’s looking like an Oscar nomination is very likely for the actress.

The Best Film category will be hotly contested with The Big Short, Bridge Of Spies, Carol, The Revenant and Spotlight all in the running for the prestigious award.
