The most recent episode of the drama ramped up the drama as the masked gunman in the town finally announced himself - and his motivations - to the town.
In a letter sent to Betty's mum Alice, the mystery killer - who named himself The Black Hood - revealed his motivations behind each attack: Ms Grundy was a child predator; Fred Andrews is an adulterer; while Moose and Midge are addicted to drugs and, allegedly, sex.
Archie formed a group of would-be watchdogs to try and catch the masked murderer, with the final moments showing the whole group together - all wearing red hoods, of course.
It turns out their name, the Red Circle, was actually pulled from a version of Archie Comics Publications in the 1970s.
The show’s creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa explained to Entertainment Weekly:
“We were trying to come up with different names for Archie’s vigilante group. “In the past, Archie Comics published a line of superhero comics that were under the imprint the Red Circle, which more recently has been the Dark Circle. “But we wanted to go more old-school, so that’s where we got the name the Red Circle.”And that’s not the only nod to the comic series’ history.
The Black Hood, the “vigilante” who has been wreaking havoc in the town, is also taken from the older Archie comics, too.
Aguirre-Sacasa said:
“The Black Hood was one of the Red Circle’s heroes — sort of anti-heroes.”But the current Black Hood won’t be taking any more inspiration from his comic namesake. The creator continued:
“It’s just an homage, really, because that guy was really more like The Punisher, a real anti-hero, where I think our Black Hood is more malevolent, more like the Zodiac or something.”Images via CW.
