It also had a real-life impact following its release.
The Olympics is coming to an end this evening and if you’re not looking to catch the closing ceremony, there are some great movies on TV this evening instead.
Our pick of the bunch tonight is a highly-rated dark thriller that flew somewhat under the radar following its release – Dark Waters.
The 2019 film, directed by Todd Haynes (May December), tells the story of the real life case of Robert Bilott against the chemical manufacturing corporation DuPont after they contaminated a town with unregulated chemicals.
Mark Ruffalo stars as Bilott and is supporting by a star-studded cast including Anne Hathaway, Bill Pullman and Tim Robbins.
The film sits on an impressive 89% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and was lauded for its performance from Ruffalo as the infuriated and frustrated lawyer trying to bring justice in the face of overwhelming odds against him.
Dark Waters also had some very real repercussions, with DuPont’s stock price dropping 7.15 points following the release of the film. However the chemicals the film focuses are mostly still used and unregulated to this day.
It’s a grim story and one that makes for hard watching at points but the film is masterfully crafted and is no wonder it made the real-life effects it did.
Dark Waters is on RTÉ One at 9.30pm.
