“You Were Much Fatter in Drive” Carey Mulligan Laughs Off Jibes Made by Director

Carey Mulligan has joked that she was shocked to hear she was “much fatter” when she starred in Drive alongside Ryan Gosling.

Apparently the actress, who featured in Nicolas Winding Refn’s crime drama, developed a strong bond with the outspoken director at the time. And apparently, he recently passed a not-so-nice comment about her weight when he saw her new, slimmed-down figure.

Carey has dropped the pounds since she took up her role as Daisy Buchanan in the film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.

Carey happily took the director’s remarks on the chin and laughed them off. Fair play. If he had aimed a comment like that at us, we probably would have just sat in a dark corner and cried our eyes out.

“He glanced over his shoulder, turned back and went ‘Ah, Carey. You were much fatter last time we met,’” said Carey, speaking about a recent meeting with Refn.

“I thought, ‘Sweet! OK, you’re going to be honest.’ But I love him. I ended up moving in with him and his family when I was making Drive because I had nowhere to live,” Carey told AnOther magazine.

Carey laughed off the remarks made by her former director.

The Great Gatsby re-make, which also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Isla Fisher and Tobey Maguire was supposed to be released in time for Christmas, but recently it was announced that the film will not hit our screens until next year.

Carey insists that the cast were determined to look in great shape for the Baz Luhrmann movie, which is set to be a visual spectacle.

“We were pretty well-behaved and going to the gym,” she said.

Do you have Gatsby fever? Are you excited to see the finished product when the film is finally released?
