Adele might be collecting a Brit Award tonight, but the singer decided to take the opportunity to show her support to singer Kesha following the collapse of her court case last week.
The singer has been embroiled in a legal battle with her producer Dr. Luke who she has accused of prolonged sexual and mental abuse during her time working with him.
Last week, a New York judge ruled that the contract could not be broken because it had been heavily negotiated and it wouldn’t be commercially reasonable. Dr. Luke had apparently said she could record without him present.
While celebrities have been tweeting their support to Kesha following the decision, Adele took to the stage of the Brit Awards tonight to accept her ‘Best Female’ gong – taking the opportunity to show her support to the singer during her acceptance speech.
While thanking her record company for respecting her work as a woman and encouraging her, she publicly stood by the singer in her sign off:
Kesha alleges that Dr. Luke drugged and raped her 10 years ago and has continually abused her, and had been requesting a preliminary injunction against the producer to be allowed record outside her contract with him.
The judge also pointed out the lack of medical evidence of sexual assault, aka hospital records.
Following the decision, a number of celebrities have pledged their support to #FreeKesha from her contract with Sony music.
