Lauryn Hill has been sentenced to three months in Federal Prison for tax evasion.

Last year the 37-year-old singer pleaded guilty to three counts of tax evasion for failing to file returns on $1.8 million in earnings made between 2005 and 2007.

Lauryn outside the court yesterday.

According to TMZ Hill’s lawyer asked the judge to have mercy because of her charity work and six children but to no avail. They also told the media that she had paid off almost $1 million of her debt to the government.

After her three-month prison stint, which will commence in July, the former Fugees star will be placed under house arrest for a further three months. This will be followed by nine months of supervised release.

She used to be in The Fugees and also had a successful solo career.

In her statement during the hearing Hill said: “I was put into a system I didn’t know the nature of… I’m a child of former slaves.”

She added: “I sold 50 million units… now I’m up here paying a tax debt. If that’s not likened to slavery, I don’t know what is.”
