Miley Cyrus appeared on US talkshow, Today Show with Matt Lauer, for the first live interview since that infamous VMA performance last month, and her most recent controversial and public spat, with Sinead O’Connor.
The 20-year-old admitted that she isn’t shocked that her recent antics, (swinging on a wrecking ball naked), has warrant a lot of attention, “It’s kind of what I want,” she said. “I’m an artist, so I’m hoping that I get a little attention or my record sales might be a little sketch.”
Lauer addressed her onstage twerking with Robin Thicke, before touching upon the controversial exchange of tweets and open letters with Sinead O’Connor.
The feud between the two has dominated headlines across the globe for almost a week now, and it seems Miley finally backing down, calling O’Connor, “an incredible artist”.
“I think she’s an incredible artist, I think she’s an awesome songwriter, and I was really inspired by her for my ‘Wrecking Ball’ video, which was what started the whole thing,” Cyrus said, referring to 46-year-old O’Connor.
“I don’t know how someone can start a fight with somebody who said, ‘Hey, I really respect you. And I really love what you what you did.’ ‘You know what? You suck! I don’t like you!’ That was kind of crazy. But as I said, I’m a big fan of hers, so it doesn’t really matter. It’s all good.”
O’Connor repsonded to the events on Friday night’s Late Late Show, by telling Tubridy her problem did not lie with Miley Cyrus but rather the producers that are “murdering the music” and the exploitation of young talent.
“20 year old women to be asked to lick sledgehammers in videos for songs that have no lyrical reference,” O’Connor stated.
Miley continued to tell Lauer that backlash and criticism does not phase her, “I don’t really worry about anything,” she said. “I know who I am and I know that I’m an artist, and I know that I put all this time and this effort into my record, and my record is proof of really who I am.”
“For me, the most important thing is being a really good person, and that doesn’t depend on what you do onstage. That depends on how you treat people when you’re offstage, and I know how I treat people, so I’m not really too worried about it.”
Cyrus’ album Bangerz, goes on sale tomorrow, Tuesday, 8th October.
