Shane MacGowan, 65, has been released from the hospital ahead of the Christmas holidays following a long stay for a serious blood infection.

The Pogues singer’s sister is ‘ecstatic’ to see her brother discharged after spending five months at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin.

Siobhan MacGowan, author of ‘The Trial of Lotta Mae’ and ‘The Graces’, told The Irish Mirror that the Christmas celebrations will be kept to a minimum, as ‘having him home is enough’.

“The family, we are ecstatic with it; we’re absolutely ecstatic he has been released from hospital. It’s fantastic, brilliant.

“We’re not going to make any big plans, just having him home is enough. We just see each other, that’s all that matters to us now. Just to be with him. Dad is 94, so hopefully, we’ll be able to get him up to see Shane as well.”

“Just to get together that’s all we want. We don’t want anything big or anything else – just to be with him.”

Siobhan also commended her brother’s strength and resilience over the last number of months.

“Whenever anybody is seriously ill, you are always fearful when you love them. It was difficult, but Shane made an amazing recovery. He is very strong and resilient; he’s got a great constitution and great willpower.”

On Wednesday night (November 22nd), Shane’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, shared the good news that the ‘Fairytale of New York’ singer would return home just in time for Christmas and his birthday.

Victoria has been keeping fans of the singer’s health and well-being, as well as a bounty of his friends coming to visit him over the course of his stay.

These included bandmates Spider Stacy and Terry Woods, Daniel O’Donnell, Imelda May, Clannad’s Moya Brennan, and Primal Scream’s frontman Bobby Gillespie, as well as fellow Nenagh singer Tom Creagh.

Wishing the MacGowan’s a wondeful Christmas.
