Now, we’re assuming that when President Obama asks you to sing the national anthem on Inauguration Day, you sing it live. However it has been confirmed this evening that Beyonce actually lip-synced her performance of the Star Spangled Banner yesterday.
The United States Marine Corps band, which played throughout the ceremony to celebrate Obama’s second inauguration, confirmed that Queen B lip-synched her way through the stunning rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner we praised yesterday (we feel so cheated).
“We don’t know why Beyoncé decided to use pre-recorded music,” a spokesperson for the band said. “All music is prerecorded as a matter of course, and that’s something we’ve done for years and years. The Marine band did perform live throughout the ceremony but we received last-minute word that Beyoncé wanted to use the recording,” the spokesperson added.
The rumours leading to the disclosure began when Sophie Gilbert, a journalist from the Washingtonian magazine, claimed that the Marine Corps Band was not actually playing the music during Beyonce’s performance. It was also claimed that during the middle of the song, Beyonce took out her earpiece, which would make it difficult for her to hear the accompanying music and stay in time with the band.
Others pointed out that Beyonce may have accidentally given away her lip-syncing plans after she posted two pictures of herself on Instagram. In the first picture, she is seen in a recording studio holding the sheet music for the national anthem. Exhibit A:
And in the next picture, she is seen sitting in front of a microphone and recording equipment with members of the Marine Corps Band. Exhibt B:
Beyonce has yet to comment on the accusations.
Did it look suspect to you?
