Director Greta Gerwig planned to include appearances from Saoirse and Timothée Chalamet but it never happened.
Everywhere you look lately it’s Barbie mania – from merch and red carpets to products and songs. But there won’t be any fuchsia pink ‘fits in Saoirse Ronan’s wardrobe this summer, as her planned cameo in the blockbuster was axed.
The movie’s director, Greta Gerwig, has said that Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet were two cameos that she wanted to feature, but do to scheduling difficulties, she couldn’t make them work. Saoirse worked with director Greta on Little Women and Lady Bird previously and was all set to make a starring cameo in Barbie.
“I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy, and both of them couldn’t do it and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much,” Greta told CinemaBlend recently. “But it felt like doing something without my children. I mean, I’m not their mom, but I sort of feel like their mom,” she added.
Saoirse told People Magazine: “I was supposed to do a cameo because I live in London and they were [filming] there.”
“There was a whole character I was going to play — another Barbie. I was gutted I couldn’t do it.”
Movie goers needn’t worry, though – when we say the Barbie cast is stacked, we’re not joking: Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Emma Mackey and Ncuti Gatwa are all making appearances, as well as the stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling who play titular character Barbie and Ken respectively. We’re really excited about Rhea Perlman and Emerald Fennell’s roles, too.
