Golfer Rory McIlroy has announced that he will represent Ireland at the 2016 Olympics scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro.
The 25-year-old from Northern Ireland was eligible to play for either Great Britain or Ireland, with his decision being the cause of much speculation.
McIlroy has now revealed his decision a day ahead of the Irish Open, which is being played at Fota Island in County Cork this weekend.
Speaking at a press conference today, the golfer said: “I was thinking about all the times I have played for Ireland as a boy and everything. For me it is the right decision to play for Ireland”.
The golfer has twice played in the World Cup for Ireland. This will be the first time golf is played as an Olympic sport since 1904.
