‘The reaction to Selena Gomez’s weight loss proves women can never win’

Kat O'Connor

Selena Gomez has come under fire because of her appearance again, and we’re tired of it

Like Selena Gomez – and most women – my weight has fluctuated throughout my life.

That’s a completely normal thing to happen, except in the eyes of online trolls and a society obsessed with women’s looks.

Selena Gomez recently attended the SAG awards with her Only Murders In The Building co-stars. It was a night of celebration, with the actors winning an award for best ensemble in a comedy, but all people could focus on was how different she looked.

People flooded social media with judgmental remarks about how much Gomez had changed since her 2024 SAG Award appearance.

In 2024, she was slated for being ‘too big’, and in 2025, she’s being accused of using Ozempic to lose weight.

The never-ending judgment proves that women can never win in the eyes of society.

We’re too fat, too skinny, too loud, too quiet, too much, not enough.

The reaction to Selena’s weight loss reminded me of a scene in The Breakfast Club. Clare (Molly Ringwald) asks Alison (Ally Sheedy) if she’s ever had sex, and her response sums up womanhood perfectly.

“Well, if you say you haven’t, you’re a prude. If you say you have, you’re a slut. It’s a trap. You want to but you can’t, and when you do you wish you didn’t, right?”

No matter what we do, there will always be someone who disagrees or belittles us.

Selena Gomez has spoken out about her multiple health conditions for years, but all people can focus on is how little or how big her stomach is.

The actress has both Lupus and SIBO, conditions which can make your weight fluctuate.

Gomez calls out people for judging her size

She previously slated people for claiming she was pregnant after her stomach appeared more rounded.

The actress called out those who were judging her appearance and said she is just a human.

She wrote on TikTok: “This makes me sick. I have SEBO in my small intestine. It flares up. I don’t care that I don’t look like a stick figure. I don’t have that body. End of story. No I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.”

Many people have defended Gomez after the harsh comparisons about her weight were shared by Alex Light.

The body confidence activist said women can never win when there is so much pressure placed on them.

She wrote: “This isn’t just about Selena, it’s about the impossible standards placed on all women – in the public eye or not. No matter what we do, someone will have an opinion. So let’s remind ourselves: our bodies are ours, not up for public discussion.”

Light was one of thousands of people to defend Gomez, with her fellow actor Taylor Launter also speaking up for her.

He wrote: “It’s a cruel world full of hate out there. You can never please everyone, nor should you have to.

“In my experience, it doesn’t make the words sting less, it just refocuses you onto what matters. And it sure isn’t the shape, color, or appearance of your body. Daily reminder to all of us to not forget how beautiful you are inside and out… and to be a little bit nicer.”

We can never win when it comes to our appearance. People will always have something to say, something to critique, something to mock, so the best thing we can do is to let go of those societal standards because all they’re doing is weighing us down and preventing us from embracing ourselves just as we are.
