Oscar Pistorius has been formally charged with the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The sprinter, who appeared in a South African court today, broke down as Magistrate Desmond Nair read out the single charge.
He was also brought to tears when the prosecution revealed their intention to argue that he is guilty of “premeditated murder.”
Oscar Pistorius was a key sporting figure last summer.
Pistorius’ legal team are reported to be applying for bail but the authorities have said they will oppose this.
The Olympic medallist will be remanded in custody until the bail hearing which has been postponed until next Tuesday
Reeva Steenkamp was found dead in her boyfriend’s home yesterday.
Thirty-year-old Steenkamp was found dead in the athlete’s home in the early hours of yesterday morning. Local media have said that the shots that killed the model were fired through a bathroom door.
