Music legend Dionne Warwick has filed for bankruptcy over a $1 million tax bill dating back to the 90s.
The soul singer apparently had no other option after a former manager mismanaged her affairs and left her with a huge debt to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
According to reports Warwick was unable to come to an agreement with the agency despite paying over the face amount of the original bill and filing her taxes annually.
The 72-year-old singer filed for bankruptcy a matter of days ago.
Her attorney Daniel Stolz told Rolling Stone: “Ms Warwick had a business manager who mismanaged her affairs. Before she knew it, she owed a gazillion dollars in taxes.
“She’s actually paid more than the face amount of the taxes, but with all of the crazy interest and penalties that they add, the number kept mushrooming – even though she paid off the amount that she owed in terms of the actual taxes.”
Here she is performing with the late Whitney Houston back in 2011.
He added that fame doesn’t necessarily guarantee good finances: “Just because someone is a well-known, prominent celebrity doesn’t mean they’re conversant in their financial affairs… She was an innocent victim of terrible mismanagement.”
Warwick is best known for her hit songs Walk On By, I Say a Little Prayer for You and I’ll Never Fall in Love Again.
