Singer, actress and all round icon, Miley Cyrus has opened up about her childhood in a recent interview with British Vogue for its June edition.
The 30-year-old said she realises now that she was judged so “harshly” during her early years as a child actress.
She said she carried a lot of “guilt and shame around” because of her media controversies and how she was made feel about them.
Growing up in the limelight as Billy Ray Cyrus’s daughter and rising to fame on Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana, must have come with its fair share of issues, especially as a young girl.
Speaking to Vogue, she said: “I carried some guilt and shame around myself for years because of how much controversy and upset I really caused.
“Now that I’m an adult, I realise how harshly I was judged.
“I was harshly judged as a child by adults and now, as an adult, I realise that I would never harshly judge a child.”
Since breaking away from the ‘Disney’ persona, Miley is giving more rock and roll vibes.
She said it was difficult for people to understand that she was just playing a Disney character and the role wasn’t who she really was.
Miley said she that she’s “actually not an attention-seeking person” but created attention trying to separate herself from her character.

“I don’t need this to be a women’s empowerment story”
Speaking about her childhood and how testing it was to distance herself from her Disney characters, Miley said she doesn’t want it to become a “complaint” about “being a woman”.
She told Vogue: “One thing I wouldn’t want this story to become is a complaint of being a woman in the industry.
“I don’t need this to be a women’s empowerment story. I wear my empowerment at all times and I don’t need to profess it.”
