Michael Douglas fought a six-month battle with throat cancer from August 2010 to January 2011, finally receiving the all clear during that year.
Douglas has now revealed in an interview with The Guardian that his illness was caused by human papillomavirus (HPV).
“Without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV, which actually comes about from cunnilingus,” the 68-year-old actor told the paper.
“I did worry if the stress caused by my son’s incarceration didn’t help trigger it. But yeah, it’s a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer,” Douglas commented.
The actor had complained of toothaches and throat infections for several months before he was diagnosed with the disease.
Douglas has been cancer-free for two years but has regular check-ups to keep his health in check.
