The Met Gala’s 2023 theme is all about Karl Lagerfeld – what can we expect?

Ellen Fitzpatrick

It’s happening.

The Met Gala’s theme for 2023 has been announced, and as designers prepare for the first Monday in May, the day will revolve around one man.

The late Karl Lagerfeld will be the centre of the Met Gala next year, with his fashion and designs on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. With the designer being the theme, Anna Wintour and Andrew Bolton, the museum’s chief costume curator, announced the news

While Lagerfeld never considered himself an artist, his work is being recognised at the major fashion event, with guests asked to use this as their inspiration for the night.

According to the editor in chief of Vogue, the idea of “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” was developed not long after Lagerfeldd’s death in 2019, with the exhibition planning to display around 150 garments focusing on his stylistic language and how that was communicated through his designs.

So what can we expect when it comes to next year’s Met Gala?

With a career spanning over six decades, Lagerfeld was the mastermind behind Chanel, Fendi and his own, self-titled brand. While he worked with these companies for a long time, and many Met Gala goers may take inspiration from the work he did there, they may look further afield.

Lagerfeld spent three years as an apprentice for Balmain in the 1950s, before getting involved with Patou where he designed 10 haute couture collections. He then moved on to Chloé, where he was the sole designer for six years.

Tadao Ando, one of Lagerfeld’s favourite architects, is set to design the exhibit and the filmmaker Loic Prigent will be on hand to interview atelier chiefs from different houses for short films to be displayed at the Gala on May 1st, 2023.

As many were close friends of the fashion designer, many will be paying tribute and homage, and that’s sure to be reflected in the looks created for the stars.
