Kesha Appeals Court Decision Forbidding Her From Making New Music

Her lawyer filed papers over the weekend.

A ruling reached last month in a New York courtroom meant that singer Kesha was not permitted to exit her contract with Kemosabe Records (the label owned by her alleged abuser Dr Luke).

Kesha has made the decision to appeal the ruling, likening her situation to ‘slavery’, Mashable reported.

Justice Shirley Kornreich said in her ruling that Sony had made allowances for Kesha to work without Dr Luke’s involvement, but Kesha’s lawyer Mark Geragos filed papers this weekend saying that the singer working under a label owned by Dr Luke even without his involvement is akin to ‘slavery’.

“Although it recognized that ‘slavery was done away with a long time ago’ and that you can’t force someone to work . . . in a situation in which they don’t want to work,’ the Court’s ruling requiring Kesha to work for Gottwald’s companies, purportedly without his involvement, does just that,” according to the appeals documents.

Kesha’s team are arguing that Kesha’s career will fade due to a loss of momentum and a lack of presence in the public eye.

Dr. Luke has called the singer’s most recent statements ‘outrageous’.
