Jonah Hill’s recent Instagram reminds us that men can be body shamed too

In a society that is rife with female body shaming, it’s important to remember this issue affects men too.

Jonah Hill recently posted a very personal message on Instagram speaking about his experience of body shaming. The Superbad actor explains how repeatedly being called “fat and gross” when he was growing up affected him mentally. The post follows a magazine Jonah has created in collaboration with A24 in which he speaks to fellow celebrities asking them all about the mental snapshot of themselves they have from when they were young. It features names like Kim Gordon, Michael Cera and Mark Gonzales. The magazine is in tandem with Jonah's directorial debut. Yesterday, the star appeared on Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show to talk about his new film, Mid90s. On the show, Jonah said that he harboured a desire to segway into film directing for a long time but said:

"I waited until I had something to say and Mid90s is my heart."

The story centres on a "lonely kid" with a "messed up life at home" who finds an outlet in skateboarding. The character, Jonah says, is reminiscent of his own childhood when he felt "so freaking lonely" aged twelve and thirteen and also looked to skateboarding to find comfort and acceptance. During the interview, Jonah also praised the child actors for their performance in the film and said that he kept the lead actor "running on Nutella". We can't wait to see the film which is set to be released on 19 October. Fair play to Jonah for talking about some really important topics; it's nice to see a more serious side to the actor.
