Television presenter Maura Derrane and Fine Gael politician John Deasy have welcomed their first child overnight, a baby boy.

Both mother and baby are said to be doing well.

Maura, who co-hosts The Today Show with Dáithí Ó’Sé, told the RTÉ Guide last month that she had unwittingly become a poster child for older women having children.

The 43-year-old said at the time: “People seem fascinated by anyone over 40 having a child.”

But she added: “One of the great things about having a child older in your life is I feel much more together now, a lot of people are very grown-up and steady in their 20s and 30s but I don’t feel I was ever a very grown-up or steady person until recently, and that’s just the way it is. It’s the right time for me and it’s perfectly normal.”

Maura continued with selected work commitments until last week, when she shared a picture of herself with celebrity chef Neven Maguire and told Twitter followers she was feeling “bigger by the day”.
