Thusday, August 9th 2012 at 16.45 – Ireland comes to a standstill to cheer on a champion.
Katie Taylor boxed her way in to the record books this afternoon, winning one of the first gold medals for women’s boxing in the history of the Olympics, with the sport only introduced to the games this year.
The 26-year-old Bray native had the hopes of a nation resting on her shoulders, and not for a second in this campaign has she let us down.
Her opponent, Russian boxer Sofya Ohigava was out for revenge, having lost to Katie in two recent finals, but Taylor was made of sterner stuff and never buckled under the pressure.
Take a look below at some amazing images from an incredible day.
